As most of us are now aware, Target stores recently suffered one of the worst financial data thefts in history. The person who broke this story, Brian Krebs, operates an IT security blog; click the link below to hear some of the gory details in his own words.
It appears that many of the 40 million card numbers stolen since black Friday in 2013 have been made available to buy in an online “hacker super store”. Because this theft included the zip code locations of the Target stores where the cards had been used – these cards have had increased attention on the black market. The bad guys can use the card information along with the likely home zip code to duplicate the cards and partake in massive shopping sprees.
If you’re an unlucky victim of this event, make sure you contact your bank and watch your statements closely!
